Charles Quintard
The chapters of this volume containing the Memoirsof the war were written by Bishop Quintardabout the year 1896 and are to be read with thatdate in mind. The work of the editor thereon hasbeen devoted to bringing them into conformity witha plan agreed upon in personal interviews with BishopQuintard about that time.
In the first and in the last two chapters of the bookthe editor has drawn freely, even to the extent oftranscribing entire sentences and paragraphs, uponthe Bishop's own addresses in the Diocesan Journalsof Tennessee; upon Memorial Addresses by his successor, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Gailor; upon material usedin some of the chapters of the Editor's "History ofthe Church in the Diocese of Tennessee;" and upondocuments preserved in the archives of The Universityof the South.
Thanks are due to the Rev. Bartow B. Ramage, theRev. Rowland Hale and Mr. George E. Purvis, amongothers, for valuable assistance in the original preparationof the Memoirs.
