When the original editionof the “Great NorthRoad” was published—in1901—the motorcar was yet a new thing. Ithad, in November, 1896, been given by Act ofParliament the freedom of the roads; but, sofar, the character of the nation’s traffic had beencomparatively little changed. People would stillturn and gaze, interested, at amechanically-propelled vehicle; and few were those folkwho had journeyed the entire distance between London andEdinburgh in one of them.
