My sole object in the preparation of thislittle volume has been to meet what I regardas a real want—a Life of John Wesley whichshall include all the essential facts in his remarkablecareer, presented in such a comprehensiveform as to be quickly read and easilyremembered by all; not so expensive as to bebeyond the reach of those of the most limitedmeans, and not so large as to require muchtime, even of the most busy worker, to masterits contents. I have sought to give my readersa faithful view of the man—his origin, earlylife, conversion, marvelous ministry, what hedid, how he did it, the doctrines he preached, the persecutions he encountered, and his triumphantend.
This revised and enlarged edition will befound to contain many interesting featuresnot found in the first edition. I have added, also, a brief account of the introduction ofMethodism into America, as well as John Wesley'sinfluence at the opening of the twentiethcentury. For this interesting chapter I amindebted to Rev. W. H. Meredith, of the NewEngland Conference, who kindly consented to[6]assist me, in view of the pressure to get themanuscript ready on time.
It will appear, from all that has been said, that Mr. Wesley was the most remarkablecharacter of the last century; and the influenceof his life is more potent for good to-daythan ever before, and must continue to augment—ifhis followers are true to their trust—tillthe end of time.
