PREFACE TO THE THIRD EDITION.
The work of which this is the third edition has beenbefore the public of this country, England, and all English-speakingcountries since 1886—thirteen years. Asit proposes a revolution in educational methods, it was notto be presumed that it would escape criticism. But, whilethe reviews of it have been numerous, they have, on thewhole, been very generous. My most radical postulateshave, however, been received by educators of the old régimewith expressions of emphatic dissent. In presentingthe third edition of the work I have, therefore, thoughtit wise to support the text with many high authorities inthe form of foot-notes. As was to be expected, my analysisof Greek history and character provoked the severestcriticism. It is regarded, indeed, as conclusive evidenceof gross ignorance of the entire subject. To meet thecharge of ignorance, I have made a large number of citationsfrom Herodotus, Thucydides, Xenophon, Plutarch,and others—authors consulted, originally, in the preparationof this part of the work. I may venture to observe,with due deference to those schoolmen who regard theancient Greeks as an ideal people, that I have searchedcontemporaneous history in vain for evidence of the verityof this claim; and I am hence constrained to adherefirmly to the extreme views expressed in the text. Andif these views are correct, it follows that the passion for[iv]Greek models in education is not only a mental dissipation,but a moral crime.
