PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION.

In laying a Second Edition before thepublic, I have decided not to alter the scopeof this little work, but simply to endeavourto increase its usefulness, by remedying omissions, and by adding new instructions wheresuch appeared desirable. I have ventured toinsert, as an Appendix, lists of the preparationsrequisite for the sick room and for the operatingroom before the ordinary operations of surgeryare performed; also, lists of the instrumentsand appliances requisite, or possibly useful,in performing forty-nine different operationson the human body. It is hoped that, bygiving the surgeon a list, such as most operators[Pg iv]draw up in manuscript for their private use, whereby they may check their preparations beforeproceeding to operate, some trouble may besaved.

PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION.

The descriptions and directions for usingsurgical apparatus in the following pages, arethose originally prepared for oral delivery in ashort course of practical lessons in bandagingand the application of surgical apparatus, givenby me in University College Hospital. No attemptis made to include all efficient modes of treatingsurgical injuries: it is merely proposed to supplythe student or practitioner with instructions bywhich he may refresh his memory when about toemploy the ordinary surgical appliances.

The drawings are by Mr. R. W. Sherwin, whohas taken much pains to furnish exact representations[Pg vi]of the apparatus, as it was applied bymyself for his delineation. The directions forgiving chloroform have had the advantage ofMr. Clover’s revision before publication.
